Pro Architectura Award for the Tisza Castle Rehabilitation / 2025

The rehabilitation of the Tisza Castle complex in Geszt has been awarded the Pro Architectura Award, one of the highest professional recognitions in Hungarian architecture.

The project is the work of architects András Zakariás, Tamás Zakariás and András Katona. The prize is granted annually to outstanding contemporary architectural achievements, acknowledging the unity of architectural quality and design concept. In 2025, four projects received the award as part of the celebrations of the Day of Hungarian Architecture.
The nearly 20-hectare castle estate has undergone a comprehensive restoration that respects its historic fabric while introducing contemporary architectural interventions.
According to the jury:
“The project combines a sensitive approach to historic spatial structures with restrained, contemporary interventions.” “The renewal of the castle complex was carried out with careful consideration of its original structure, complemented by clearly articulated new elements.”
The restored main building, together with revitalized service buildings and newly established functions, forms a coherent and accessible ensemble. Transparent connections and spatial clarity contribute to a renewed identity that serves both cultural memory and present-day use. The development has resulted in a site worthy of its status as a national heritage location, while also becoming a vibrant and welcoming destination.
The Geszt Tisza Castle project stands as a model for heritage reconstruction in Hungary, demonstrating how historic values can be preserved and reinterpreted through contemporary architectural thinking.
